September 27

Radar is Used for the First Time

On this day in 1922, the United States Navy began using radar. If a ship passed between a radio transmitter and a receiver, the ship would cause the radio waves to change direction. This method of "seeing" objects with radio waves is called radar. Radar played an important role helping the United States find enemy ships during World War II. Radar is still used today.
