5000-year-old Iceman Found Frozen in the Alps!

On this day in 1991, German climbers hiking in the Alps discovered a mummified body frozen on top of a glacier near the Austrian-Italian border. At first police and forensic experts didn't realize how old the Iceman was—despite the fact that he was carrying bows and arrows and wearing a grass cape and shoes stuffed with grass for warmth.

Later, scientists used radiocarbon dating to determine that the man had died sometime between 3350 and 3300 B.C. Preserved by the extreme cold, the Iceman is the oldest complete mummy in the world.
