Biggest Earthquake Hits Chile

On this day in 1960, the largest earthquake ever recorded struck Chile, rocking the countryside with forces measuring 9.5 on the Moment Magnitude scale. Any earthquake greater than 7.8 on this scale qualifies as a great, or huge, earthquake. The earthquake left two million people homeless and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
