Smallest Known Object Announced in 1897

On this day in 1897, Joseph J. Thomson announced his discovery of what was then thought to be the smallest known object, the electron. An electron is one of the types of particles that make up atoms. The other particles in the atom, protons and neutrons, were discovered years later.
