Antonia Novello, Surgeon General of the United States
On this day in 1990, Dr. Antonia Novello, pediatrician and coordinator of research on AIDS, was appointed Surgeon General of the United States. She was the first woman and the first Latin American to hold this post. The Surgeon General of the United States is the nation's official spokesperson on matters of public health.
