Science Giants: Benjamin Franklin
On this day in 1706, Benjamin Franklin, the statesman and writer often referred to as the first American scientist, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Franklin was a man of many talents. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence and wrote popular books such as Poor Richard's Almanac. He is recognized for experiments on electricity, and his inventions include the lightning rod, bifocal eyeglasses, and a fuel-efficient wood-burning stove.
