Dog in Orbit: Laika, Come Home!

On this day in 1957, Russian scientists launched Sputnik 2, the second satellite to be put into orbit around the Earth. It was carrying very special cargo—a dog named Laika.

Laika was the first living creature ever to be placed in orbit. Laika's journey proved that living creatures could survive in space.
