Thrust Supersonic Car Breaks the Sound Barrier

On this day in 1997, former fighter pilot Andy Green drove his Thrust Supersonic car faster than the speed of sound. In breaking the sound barrier, he set the first supersonic land speed record in the world. The Thrust Supersonic's speed averaged 1223 kilometers per hour (760 miles per hour) during its record-shattering drive!
