It's 1492 and Christopher Columbus has just come to the New World. Upon his arrival, the native peoples who live there greet him. They bring many gifts to welcome him. One of the presents he receives is tobacco. The natives use this plant for chewing, smoking, and healing wounds. He takes the tobacco home to Europe, where it becomes very popular.
When Columbus brought tobacco to Europe, no one had any idea of the health problems it caused. People thought it was OK to smoke. |
