Alpine glaciers are large masses of ice that "flow" downhill. As these masses of ice move downhill, they carve the Earth's surface. Just like rivers, glaciers cut valleys. However, the shapes of glacier-carved landforms differ from those formed by running water. Glaciers shape the land in many different ways. They remove loose rock and soil and deposit it some distance away. The weight of the ice can scrape, gouge, and carve rock surfaces. |
