Each water molecule has a positive and negative side. The water molecules rotate as the changing electric force field of the microwaves attracts and repels different sides of the water molecules. The molecules bump into each other and cause friction, which in turn creates the heat that cooks your food.

To learn more about microwave ovens:

1. Go to the Zap It! WWW Sheet and print it.

2. Visit these Web sites. At the "What Do Microwaves Do To Water?" site, click the next button. Then complete the WWW Sheet.
