Single-celled organisms usually divide when they reach a certain size. They split into two smaller cells that in turn can grow larger and divide, continuing the cycle.

Mitosis is the process by which one cell becomes two cells with exactly the same genetic information. Scientists who study mitosis have special names to talk about the steps, or phases, a cell goes through as it grows bigger and divides.
