Imagine a world where sugar was off limits. No candy. No sugary drinks. No syrup on pancakes. Welcome to the world of diabetes. To people with diabetes, sugar is a problem.

Diabetes is a noncommunicable disease that can be caused by not having enough insulin in your body. Insulin helps your body use the sugar from the food you eat. The pancreas, an organ near the stomach, makes insulin. If the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin, you can get very sick. Your cells have a lot of trouble getting all the energy they need, and your blood is flooded with sugar you can't use.
