Calling all white blood cells! Calling all white blood cells! The kid's got a splinter and bacteria are all over the place.

Welcome to the world of the white blood cell. White blood cells "eat" stuff that doesn't belong in the body. It's called phagocytosis. In Greek, "phago" means "eat," "cyte" means "cell," and "osis" is a cool ending that means there's some action going on. So if you're a bacterial cell and a white blood cell comes up, chances are there will be some phagocytosis going on. Look out!
