Without periodic fires, dried and dead vegetation can pile up faster than nature can decompose it.

For a long time, people worked hard to prevent all forest fires. However, as debris builds up on the forest floor, the danger of wildfires increases. Wildfires are uncontrollable blazes that destroy everything in their paths.

By trying to help the forest, people were actually setting the forest up for some devastating fires.
