Having a geosynchronous, or geostationary, orbit means that a satellite goes around the Earth at the same speed that the Earth rotates on its axis. Such a satellite doesn't just stay above the equatorit stays above one spot along the equator. As a result, it will stay above one particular area of the Earth at all times.
