Hydrothermal vents are like chimneys at the bottom of the ocean. They release boiling hot water and a variety of gases, some of which are poisonous to humans. Scientists were amazed when they found animals living in this harsh environment. During the last 20 years, researchers have discovered more than 300 species that call hydrothermal vents their home.
