Imagine you are eating breakfast, and suddenly everything starts shaking. The dishes are rattling and orange juice is splashing out of your glass. Then, as suddenly as it started, it stops. You have just experienced an earthquake.

Earthquakes happen when the Earth's crust moves along a crack called a fault. When the crust moves suddenly, everything nearby shakes and rattles.
