NASA scientists are using infrared images from satellites to identify which structures in cities absorb the most heat. Cities often are called heat islands because they absorb and hold so much heat.

At night, instead of cooling off as much as the surrounding countryside, city buildings and surfaces radiate heat, keeping the city warm. In the summer, this can be a real problem!
