Another way to produce electrical energy from chemical energy is with a fuel cell. Fuel cells produce electrical energy from a chemical reaction that uses fuel. Instead of burning the fuel like a gasoline engine, the fuel chemically reacts and releases energy. The most common type of fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. The reaction of the fuel produces electric current and water.

Fuel cells have been used for many years to produce electrical energy for spacecraft.
