Sometimes a chemical reaction produces energy, such as when charcoal or fuel in a rocket burns. A fire releases energy as heat and light.

There's another kind of chemical reaction that turns energy into light without any heat. This is chemical light, or chemiluminescence. This kind of chemical light is also called cool light. A lightstick is an example of a chemical light.
