It's a summer thunderstorm! Along with the lightning, thunder, winds, and rain come balls of ice, or hail. Hail may form in the clouds and then fall to the ground.

The temperature of air gets colder as you move higher in the atmosphere. Even during the summer, if you move high enough away from the earth, the temperature of the air will be lower than the freezing point of water O°C (32°F). Droplets of water carried up to these very cold parts of the atmosphere will change to ice. Pieces of ice that fall to the ground are called hail.
