Scientists learn about how living things have changed by studying fossils. When living things die, parts of their structure are replaced by minerals. The minerals create a copy of the structures of the organism.

The most common fossils are the hard parts of plants and animals. Plant fossils are usually just tree trunks. Animal fossils are usually just shells or bones.
