Arachne was a skillful weaver who was very proud of her ability. One day she challenged the Greek goddess Athena to a weaving contest. When the goddess saw that Arachne's work was as beautiful as her own, she became so angry that she turned the girl into a spider! Then the only thing Arachne could weave was a web.
