Trees are the largest of all the plants. One of the most easily recognized features of a tree is the trunk. The trunk continues to grow throughout the life of the tree. A tree that is very old usually has a large trunk.

As the tree grows, new cells are added to the trunk. This is why the trunk grows larger. When the new cells are added, they form rings.
